    Bronx Borough President Allocates Capital Funding to Poe’s Cottage

    The Cottage is one of 101 projects the Borough President has provided capital dollars for this year. On August 14, 2019, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. announced that he will provide the Edgar Allen Poe cottage with $450,000 in capital funding through his 2020 Fiscal Year budget. Poe Cottage, built in 1812, is known for being horror writer Edgar Allen Poe’s final home. The Cottage is now a historic house museum and is a New York City and State landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places. (read more…)

    Parks Department and Elected Officials Celebrate Reopening of Parque de los Niños in the Bronx

    Reconstruction project cost $4.35 million and features a new track and ballfields. On August 13, 2019, the Department of Parks and Recreation announced the reopening of Parque de los Ninos, located on the corner of Morrison Avenue and Watson Avenue in the Soundview section of the Bronx. Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver, FAICP, was joined by Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., New York State Assembly Member Marcos A. Crespo, New York City Council Member Ruben Diaz Sr, members of Bronx Community Board 9 and local residents to celebrate the reopening of the playground. (read more…)

    City Planning Approves Affordable Housing and Demapping in Westchester Square

    Critics raised concerns over more traffic due to larger number of parking spaces. On February 27, 2019, the City Planning Commission voted to approve an application for a nine-story mixed-use residential and commercial building at 1346 Blondell Avenue in the Westchester Square section of the Bronx. To facilitate this development, named Blondell Commons, the application calls for rezoning a portion of a larger manufacturing district that mainly features auto repair shops along Blondell Avenue. Blondell Equities LLC brought the application. (read more…)

    City Planning Considers Application for 157 Affordable Apartments in the Bronx

    The building will have 24 apartments for formerly homeless individuals and families. On December 5, 2018, the City Planning Commission held a public hearing for an application for the construction of an eleven-story, low residential building, at 656 East 176th Street in the Bronx. The Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) and Proxy Estate, Inc. brought the application, requesting a zoning change and disposition of city-owned property to facilitate the project.     City Planning Commission Considers Rezoning Application Near Train Terminal

    Rezoning will allow for construction of building with 185 affordable units. On November 14, 2018, the City Planning Commission held a public hearing for a rezoning application that would allow for the construction of a new affordable nine-story mixed-use building in the Wakefield neighborhood of the Bronx. The proposed project site is on the corner of White Plains Road and East 241st, adjacent to the East 241st Street subway terminal along the IRT – 2 train line. The proposed project site currently has several vacant commercial buildings and garages that are surrounded by a construction fence.

    Proposed Building to Bring 52 Affordable Units to Belmont Area of the Bronx

    The building will be entirely affordable and environmentally efficient. On October 31, 2018, the City Planning Commission held a public hearing on an application to construct a mixed-use, mixed income building at 4697 Third Avenue in the Belmont section of the Bronx. The Department of Housing Preservation (HPD) brought the application to designate 4697 Third Avenue as an Urban Development Action Area, requiring the ULURP process. The applicant team consists of the developer Bronx Pro Group and Curtis + Ginsberg Architects. 4697 Third Avenue is currently a vacant lot between East 188th Street and Cyrus Place. (read more…)
