After modifications and a lengthy Stated Meeting, Borough Based Jails passed despite significant opposition. On October 17, 2019, the City Council voted to approve the City’s Borough Based Jails System application with modifications. The approved plan includes four jail facilities located at 124-125 White Street in Manhattan, 745 East 141st Street in the Bronx, 126-02 82nd Avenue in Queens and at 275 Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn and closure of the Rikers Island detention facility.

Bronx Playground Receives $8 Million Upgrade with Green Infrastructure
The playground provides new community amenities and improves the health of the Harlem River. On June 7, 2019, the Department of Parks and Recreation announced the completion of an $8 million upgrade to Saw Mill Playground in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx. The playground is located on East 139th Street between Brook and Willis Avenues.

Landmarks Designates the National Society of Colonial Dames in New York Headquarters as Individual Landmark
Although the original landmarking proposal also included an application to designate the Headquarter’s interiors, the Colonial Dames Society withdrew their support for that application. On June 11, 2019, the Landmarks Preservation Commission voted to designate the Headquarters of the National Society of Colonial Dames in the State of New York as an individual landmark. Melanie La Rocca Appointed New Commissioner of DOB
La Rocca will head the agency responsible for nearly 1.1 million buildings and over 45,000 active construction sites in New York City. On May 6, 2019, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that Melanie La Rocca will be the new Commissioner of the Department of Buildings. La Rocca will begin on June 3rd.
Council Member’s Legislation to Reveal Campaign Contribution Sources
Voters will receive the campaign contribution information in the CFB’s Voter Guides. On April 9, 2019, Council Member Ben Kallos introduced Introduction 1504 of 2019, a proposed bill that would reveal where politicians get their campaign contributions from and make this information more accessible to voters. To track the source of contributions, the bill would require campaign contributors to indicate their industry.
