    The Redistricting Schedule

    On November 2, 2021, New York State voters will be asked to approve a constitutional amendment revising the redistricting process to be based on the 2020 census. If the constitutional amendment is approved, the changes will take effect on January 1, 2022. This amendment is necessary to address delays in the census created by the pandemic and to accommodate New York State’s change from a September primary to an earlier June primary for both federal and state elections. These changes compressed the time needed to complete the redistricting. Without these changes, it is possible that the new districts will not be ready in time for the political process to function.     Mapping the New Senate, Assembly & Congressional Districts

    New York State in 2021 must redraw the State’s senate, assembly and congressional districts. The process will be different from the process used to draw legislative and congressional district lines in the past. Previously, the State legislature redrew the districts for its own members and for the State’s congressional members.  After years of efforts to reform a process seen as too self-interested, New York State voters in 2014 approved an amendment to the State constitution that created a  new Redistricting Commission that will propose new district lines to the legislature. The legislature still gets the last word, but the commission process opens the redistricting process up, provides an outside entity to act as the initial proposer, and adds guidelines for map design for fairness.     Rezoning Application Will Map First MIH Area in Brooklyn Community District 15

    New development will include both residential and commercial uses. On August 8, 2018, the City Planning Commission approved a rezoning application by Quentin Plaza LLC for 1881-1883 McDonald Avenue in the Homecrest neighborhood of Brooklyn. The proposed zoning map and zoning text amendment will facilitate a new mixed-use building. The rezoning area is bounded by Avenue P to the north, East 2nd Street to the east, Woodside Avenue to the south, and McDonald Avenue to the west. (more…)

    Commercial Use Amendment Approved for Bedford Avenue Residential Block

    City Planning approved a zoning map amendment permitting ground floor space for commercial use in residential buildings in Williamsburg neighborhood. On December 13, 2017, the City Planning Commission issued a favorable report on the application submitted by 116 Bedford Avenue, LLC—owner of 116 Bedford Avenue in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood. This zoning map amendment would permit the building to use ground floor space for commercial use and bring five other existing commercial uses currently located in the ground floors of similar mixed-use buildings on the block into conformance.     Maple Lanes Bowling Alley to Become Market-Rate Apartments

    Demolition of bowling alley will lead to construction of 112 dwelling units and a two-story synagogue. On October 20, 2008, an application for a zoning map amendment was filed to rezone property located at 1560 60th Street in Brooklyn. The location has been occupied by Maple Lanes Bowling Alley for more than 50 years. The application calls for the demolition of the one-story, 35,000-square-foot bowling alley.

    The application, filed by Fairmont Lanes LLC, would rezone the location from M1-1 to R6A to facilitate construction of a mixed-use development. The proposed rezoning would cover the entire 72,704-square-foot, irregularly shaped lot. The residential component of the proposal consists of 24 attached and semi-detached four-story buildings, 21 of which would be townhouse-style buildings containing four dwelling units each. At the corners of 16th Avenue and 60th Street, and 16th Avenue and 61st Street, larger residential buildings with seven dwelling units each would be constructed. The project also includes a two-story synagogue that would serve area residents. Accessory parking would be provided for 56 cars in a below-grade parking garage. The overall floor area ratio for the project would be 2.52.
