    Court of Appeals Allows Historic Clock to be Closed to the Public and Converted

    Landmarks acted within its authority when it approved the LLC’s certificate of appropriateness. On March 28, 2019, the New York Court of Appeals ruled that the Certificate of Appropriateness granted the Landmarks Preservation Commission for 346 Broadway in 2014 was proper, reversing two lower courts’ decision. In 1987, the Landmarks Preservation Commission designated 346 Broadway as an interior landmark. The designation included the building’s banking hall and the 13th floor clock tower, which houses a mechanical clock. At the time of designation, the City owned the building and the clock tower was opened to the public for weekly tours.

    Seven Buildings South of Union Square Enter Designation Process

    The buildings feature various architectural styles and were home to garment manufacturers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. On September 25, 2018, the Landmarks Preservation Commission unanimously voted to add seven buildings to its calendar for consideration as individual landmarks. The buildings are located at 817 Broadway, 826 Broadway, 830 Broadway, 832 Broadway, 836 Broadway, 840 Broadway, and 841 Broadway. All of the buildings are south of Union Square in Manhattan.  (read more…)

    Sarah Carroll Appointed Chair of Landmarks Preservation Commission

    Sarah Carroll continues to rise within the Landmarks Preservation Commission. On September 26, 2018, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the appointment of Sarah Carroll as the new Chair of the Landmarks Preservation Commission. The Landmarks Preservation Commission is the largest municipal preservation agency in the nation, responsible for protecting New York City’s architecturally, historically, and culturally significant buildings and sites by granting them landmark or historic district status, and regulating them after designation.     DUMBO Historic District Commemorates New District Marker

    Marker celebrates importance of manufacturing history of the district. On August 24, 2018, the Landmarks Preservation Commission, the New York Landmarks Preservation Foundation, and the DUMBO Neighborhood Alliance, announced a historic district marker to promote and commemorate the 2007 designation of the DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) Historic District. The marker is located mid-block on Jay Street, between Water and Plymouth Streets, highlighting the boundaries of the district and its historic importance.     Redevelopment Of Site Of Deadly Explosion Approved After Modifications

    Applicants presented a plan with a reduced penthouse and modified storefronts, among other changes, with a bronze plaque memorializing those who lost lives in 2015 gas explosion. On August 7, 2018, Landmarks considered and approved a modified proposal for two lots at 119-121 Second Avenue in the East Village/Lower East Side Historic District. The empty lots, at the corner of East 7th Street, compose a portion of the site of a 2015 explosions, caused by an illegal gas set-up, that led to the deaths of two people, caused multiple injuries and destroyed three buildings. The project’s developers are Nexus Development Group, who acquired the property in 2017. (read more…)
