    Mayor Announces FY20 Affordable Housing Statistics

    Mayor’s affordable housing announcement appears more retrospective than optimistic. On August 5, 2020, The Mayor’s Press Office released a statement touting the amount of affordable housing created in fiscal year 2020. The announcement states that the City preserved 23,520 homes and constructed 6,503 new units, totaling 30,023 affordable City financed homes. More than 50 percent of these homes serve families earning less than $52,000 and 3,600 people received voucher increases to ameliorate income lost from the COVID-19 pandemic.

    City Secures Affordable Housing for Over 16,000 Households

    The City has now produced more than 164,000 units or more than 50 percent of the Mayor’s Housing plan to create 300,000 affordable homes by 2026. On April 3, 2020, Housing Preservation and Development announced the preservation of 16,083 affordable homes for New Yorkers. (more…)

    City Planning Hears Proposal to Convert Three City-Owned Properties to Affordable Housing

    All three proposed buildings would come with amenities for residents including outdoor areas and laundry rooms. On June 19, 2019, the City Planning Commission held a public hearing on an application to convert three City-owned properties located in the East New York neighborhood of Brooklyn to new affordable housing buildings. All three properties are currently vacant. The three proposed buildings would result in 41 affordable units and one superintendent’s unit. (more…)

    HPD Announces Partners for Two Senior Affordable Housing Projects in the Bronx and Brooklyn

    There will be over 350 affordable units for seniors between the two projects. On March 11, 2019, the Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) and the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) announced the selection of partners for the development of two 100 percent senior affordable housing projects in the Bronx and Brooklyn. The projects are a part of HPD’s Senior First strategy, a three-prong strategy to ensure safe and affordable housing for seniors in New York City. (more…)

    HPD Announces Modular Affordable Housing in East New York

    The program will create studio to four bedroom homes for low income and formerly homeless individuals. On March 4, 2019, the Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) announced plans to develop 167 affordable units on City-owned land in East New York. The program is being developed by a team led by Thorobird Companies along with nonprofit partner Bangladeshi American Community Development and Youth Services (BACDYS) and will have a unique modular design to hold the mixed-use development on City-owned land on the Grant Avenue Municipal lot located at 581 Grant Avenue in East New York.
