New York Primaries 2025: What to Expect

On Tuesday, June 24 2024, New Yorkers will return to the polls to vote in the city’s primary elections. There will be citywide elections for Mayor, Public Advocate and Comptroller this year, as well as borough presidents and all City Council districts.

New York is a closed primary state, so voters must register with a political party participating in the primary to vote. The deadline to register to vote, update your address or request an absentee ballot online or by mail is Saturday, June 14th.

Early voting will run from Saturday, June 14th to Sunday, June 22rd. To find your early voting and Election Day polling location, click here. Absentee ballots must be returned to poll sites or postmarked by Election Day and received by Tuesday, April 2nd.

For more information, visit the Board of Elections site here. Voters can view sample ballots here.

Over the past few months, the Center for New York City and State Law at New York Law School has hosted and co-hosted a variety of primary election related events, including:

  • Comptroller Candidate Debate (video)
  • Democratic Mayoral Candidate Forum on Parks, Recreation, and Open Space (video)
  • 2025 Primary Election Preview with Max Politics and FAQ NYC (video)
  • Manhattan Borough President Candidate Debate (video)

In addition, the Center is a co-sponsor of one of the official televised debates in the 2025 Democratic primary for Mayor of New York City. The debate will be held tonight, June 12, 2025 at 7 p.m. and air on Spectrum News NY1.

After the primary, the general election is set for November 4th.
