    City Launches COVID-19 Cluster Map Amid Rise in Hotspots

    Indicated zones will undergo restrictions for a minimum of 14 days after the zone is identified. On October 7, 2020, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the launch of the ‘Find Your Zone’ map, the City’s newest tool to help New Yorkers stay informed about the spread of COVID-19. The map allows users to enter an address to identify if that location is in a COVID-19 hotspot and what restrictions may apply to that zone for local schools, businesses, houses of worship, and other gatherings.     On October 2, 2020, Annette Gordon-Reed, the Carl M. Loeb University Professor at Harvard Law School, spoke at the 169th CityLaw Breakfast. Professor Gordon-Reed spoke on “Policing in America: Writing a New Chapter?” Professor Ross Sandler, Director of the Center for New York City Law gave opening remarks and Dean Anthony W. Crowell provided closing remarks. This Breakfast was sponsored by ConEdison, Greenberg Traurig, and Verizon. This was the third virtual CityLaw Breakfast as in-person events are not feasible at this time due to the COVID-19 pandemic. (more…)

    Comptroller Proposes Bike-to-School Plan for Low-Income High School Students

    This plan includes free bikes and Citi Bike memberships and building one and a half miles of protected bike lanes around 50 New York City high schools in the next year. On September 3, 2020, New York City Comptroller Scott Singer proposed a bike-to-school plan as a sustainable, safe, and healthy transportation option for the city’s young people returning to school this fall amid the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.     City Reaches Deal to Push Back Start of School Year Over COVID-19 Safety Concerns

    Students will start their first week online and then return to blended learning on September 21nd. On September 1, 2020, Mayor Bill de Blasio and DOE Chancellor Richard Carranza announced a deal with the teacher’s union to push back the start of the 2020 – 2021 school year to provide schools more time to implement COVID-19 safety plans and upgrades. The deal ends talks of a teachers’ strike out of fear that NYC schools were reopening too quickly without enough time to properly develop safety plans, scheduling and other needs.  (more…)

    Landmarks Holds Public Hearing on Public School 48 Designation

    Landmarks advocates and elected officials support the designation of the school as a landmark. On August 4, 2020, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing to designate Public School 48 in Jamaica, Queens as an individual landmark. Public School 48, also known as the Robert E. Peary School, is located at 155-02 108th Avenue and is an Art Deco style three-story public school building designed by Walter C.
