Landmarks Designates Kimlau War Memorial and Archeological Site

The designations are the latest in the agency’s efforts for more inclusive designations. On June 22, 2021, the Landmarks Preservation Commission voted to designate the Kimlau War Memorial in Chinatown and the Aakawaxung Munahanung (Island Protected from the Wind) Archaeological Site in Staten Island. The designations mark the first New York City designated landmarks to recognize Chinese American and Native American history.


Fairview Park Project Completed

The previously undeveloped plot of land has been transformed into a community greenspace through a $20.3 million transformation project. Early voting begins on Saturday June 12th and lasts through Sunday June 20th.


Public Beaches Open for Memorial Day Weekend

The full opening of beaches follows last year’s limited and restricted summer season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. On May 28, 2021, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that eight public beaches across the city will be open for swimming starting Saturday, May 29 and will be open through Sunday, September 12, 2021. Swimming will be permitted when lifeguards are on duty between 10 AM to 6 PM and is prohibited when lifeguards are off duty.


Almeda Playground Renovations Completed in Rockaway

Almeda Playground’s $8.1 million renovation have been completed as a part of the Community Parks Initiative to build a more equitable park system. On May 12, 2021, Commissioner Mitchell J.
