On March 5, 2024, Matthew Ketschke, President of Con Edison of New York, spoke at the 191st CityLaw Breakfast on “New York’s Clean Energy Future.” Ross Sandler, Professor and Director of the Center for New York City Law, offered opening remarks. Dean and President of New York Law School Anthony W. Crowell also provided remarks.  The event was sponsored by Con Edison, Verizon, and Greenberg Traurig LLP.

Mr. Ketschke began his discussion by talking about Con Edison’s role in New Yorkers’ daily lives and how the company has grown to meet the needs of New Yorkers. He discussed changes to state and local laws to promote resiliency and energy efficiency and the challenges the company faces in responding to growing problems from climate change. Superstorm Sandy and other severe weather events are becoming more common, and Con Edison has had to figure out how to make its equipment and assets more resilient to prevent disruptions in service. Mr. Ketschke likened it to trying to fix a jet engine plane while it is flying midair; it is a careful balance between maintaining service and implementing changes. Mr. Ketschke discussed the challenges with long-term renewable energy storage, retrofitting old buildings, and expanding the service capacity so Con Edison can meet growing demand for power during hot summer months.
