Department of Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia

Department of Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia spoke at this morning’s 156th CityLaw Breakfast at New York Law School. Commissioner Garcia was introduced by Professor Ross Sandler, Director of the Center for New York City Law, with remarks by Dean Anthony W. Crowell. Commissioner Garcia spoke about “Taking on Big Plastic”. 

Commissioner Garcia discussed legislative initiatives and both existing and proposed programs to combat waste generated by non-recyclable material. Commissioner Garcia discussed the difficulty of introducing legislation that affects big manufacturers, including producers of electronic products. She also discussed initiatives to combat single-use plastic bags, citing that 10 billion single-use bags are used by New Yorkers each year. She stated that the Department of Sanitation is committed to taking action on plastic bags with involvement both from Mayor DeBlasio and Governor Cuomo. Commissioner Garcia emphasized programs that have been introduced, including composting, zero-waste initiatives, and the push for commercial waste zones.
