On April 25, 2025, the Department of Design and Construction and Department of Health and Mental Hygiene celebrated the completion of the Bushwick Health Center renovation project. The Center is a three-story building that offers community health services including workshops for expecting families, diabetes education, assistance with health insurance, and teen programming. Primary care and social services are also offered by partners in the building.

The building’s main entrance received a new accessible ramp. Parking areas, the courtyard, and the lot’s drainage, the building’s masonry, outside doors and security screens were all renovated. New security lighting and exterior signage was added, and the building’s envelope was renovated to prevent moisture penetration. Areas of the building impacted by water penetration were renovated, and new doors, roofs, windows, and other elements were installed. The building’s chillers were also replaced.

The $17.3 million renovation began in May 2022 and was completed on schedule. The Department of Design and Construction managed the project for Health and Mental Hygiene and worked with Thornton Tomasetti, Inc. and Sea Breeze General Construction, Inc.

DDC Commissioner Thomas Foley stated, “This $17.3 million project lets the staff of the Bushwick Health Center better serve the people who visit the building for vital healthcare and programming. The entry is now fully ADA-compliant with a new ramp, which increase accessibility. We also installed new roofs and windows, a new cooling system, added waterproofing to the building, upgraded drainage in the Center’s parking lots, beautified the courtyard and made other needed improvements around the exterior. Thanks to the diligent DDC team, the project was done on schedule and saved taxpayers $1.5 million.”

Health Department Deputy Commissioner Dr. Zahirah McNatt stated, “This investment in Bushwick, a vibrant and dynamic neighborhood, is a critical step in the Health Department’s ongoing work to center health equity. These health center upgrades create a welcoming environment for New Yorkers to better access primary care, social services and health-centered education, and we look forward to welcoming our neighbors into the updated space.”
