Three Manhattan buildings individually designated

Landmarks unanimously voted to protect a five-story building on Bowery, a Canal Street theater, and an East Village church. On September 7, 2010, Landmarks designated three Manhattan buildings as individual City landmarks. Landmarks unanimously approved a five-story cast-iron building at 97 Bowery, the terra cotta-adorned Loew’s Canal Street Theatre, and the Gothic-Revival style Eleventh Street Methodist Episcopal Chapel.

New district for Manhattan’s Upper West Side

Manhattan Avenue historic district to encompass 40 buildings. Landmarks unanimously designated the Manhattan Avenue Historic District, a 40-building district that encompasses several sets of row houses built between 1886 and 1889 on West 105th and West 106th Streets and Manhattan Avenue. Landmarks Awards 2023 Preservation Grants

On October 25, 2023, the Landmarks Preservation Commission announced the seven latest grants from its Historic Preservation Grant Program. These recipients each received between $24,000 and $62,500 for restoration work, including removal of lead paint hazards. Recipients also receive hands-on technical assistance from Landmarks staff throughout the project.

Landmarks Votes to Designate Bronx Opera House, FDNY Buildings as Individual Landmarks

On June 13, 2023, the Landmark Preservation Commission voted unanimously to designate the Bronx Opera House, Engine Company 88/Ladder Company 38 Firehouse, and Fire Alarm Telegraph Bureau, Bronx Central Office as individual landmarks. All three buildings located in the Bronx have architectural and historical significance to the borough.

Landmarks Designates Former Segregated School in Chelsea as Individual Landmark

On May 23, 2023, the Landmarks Preservation Commission voted to designate the former Colored School No. 4 as an individual landmark. The former school, located at 128 West 17th Street in Chelsea, is the city’s sole surviving school building that exclusively served African American students in the second half of the 19th century.

Landmarks Calendars Fire Alarm Office in West Farms

On March 14, 2023, the Landmarks Preservation Commission voted to calendar the Fire Alarm and Telegraph Bureau, Bronx Central Office building located at 1129 East 180th Street in the West Farms section of the Bronx. The building has remained in use for over a century.
