On Friday May 5, 2017, the Center for New York City Law at New York Law School hosted the 143rd CityLaw Breakfast and the 3rd annual Civic Fame Awards. The event speaker was Inside City Hall Host Errol Louis.
Errol Louis was welcomed by Anthony Crowell, President and Dean of New York Law School and introduced by Ross Sandler, Professor of Law and Director of the Center for New York City Law. He spoke about the importance of local journalism in today’s era of cable news. The longtime host remarked that “if you go to the Queens County Courthouse, the press room is empty.” Courthouse reporting is the cornerstone of political reporting and its not getting covered. Louis encouraged attendees to find ways to counter this decline in local civic awareness.
Ross Sandler and Anthony Crowell honored the 106th Mayor of the City of New York, the Honorable David N. Dinkins, retiring deputy executive director and general counsel of the NYC Conflicts of Interest Board Wayne G. Hawley, founding sponsor of the CityLaw Breakfast Series ConEdison, and NY1’s Inside City Hall.
Arthur Abbey and Anthony Crowell also presented Ross Sandler with the American Bar Association’s Jefferson B. Fordham Lifetime Achievement Award. (more…)

The event speaker was New York Police Department Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence and Counter-terrorism John Miller. Commissioner Miller was welcomed by Anthony Crowell, President and Dean of New York Law School and introduced by Ross Sandler, Professor of Law and Director of the Center for New York City Law.
Commissioner Miller began by discussing his now infamous interview with Osama Bin Laden in 1998 as a senior correspondent for CBS News. Miller focused his discussion on the globalization of terrorism that has occurred since that interview. He remarked that while globalization has so many positive attributes, including connecting people and countries, it has also been a leading driver in the success of terrorism today. In response, the NYPD must now react to an attack in Paris the same way as an attack in New York City. This has lead to a liaison program that the NYPD has with major cities around the globe.
