On January 6, 2024, the Department of Design and Construction and the Department of Cultural Affairs announced the start of a new renovation project for the Clemente Soto Vélez Cultural and Educational Center located at 107 Suffolk Street in the Lower East Side. 



City Planning Hears Application for Arts Center and Affordable Housing Development in Brownsville

City Receives Over $10 Million in Grants to Support Electrification of Governors Island Ferry, Operation of Staten Island Ferry

On December 1, 2023, Mayor Eric Adams announced that the city has received over $10 million from the U.S. Federal Transit Administration to support ferry services to Staten Island and Governor’s Island. The funding includes a $7.5 million grant to install shoreside rapid charging infrastructure for the new hybrid-electric Governors Island Ferry and $3 million to rehabilitate the City’s Department of Transportation offsite storage facility that supports the Staten Island Ferry. 


City Planning Hears Application for New Affordable and Supportive Housing, Arts Center in East Harlem

On November 29, 2023, the City Planning Commission held a public hearing for an application to create a mixed-use 100 percent affordable building at 101 East 118th Street in East Harlem. The proposed 19-story building, called Timbale Terrace, will also be the new home for Afro Latin Jazz Alliance. The site is currently a parking lot for the New York Police Department’s 25th Precinct.
