HPD and DSS Announce Pilot Program to Renovate Chronically Vacant Rent Stabilized Units

On December 18, 2023, the Department of Housing Preservation and Development and the Department of Social Services announced the start of a new pilot program that helps New Yorkers move out of shelters and into renovated rent-stabilized apartments. The program, Unlocking Doors, is now accepting applications from owners of rent-stabilized buildings with rental units that need repairs. 


City Receives Over $10 Million in Grants to Support Electrification of Governors Island Ferry, Operation of Staten Island Ferry

On December 1, 2023, Mayor Eric Adams announced that the city has received over $10 million from the U.S. Federal Transit Administration to support ferry services to Staten Island and Governor’s Island. The funding includes a $7.5 million grant to install shoreside rapid charging infrastructure for the new hybrid-electric Governors Island Ferry and $3 million to rehabilitate the City’s Department of Transportation offsite storage facility that supports the Staten Island Ferry. 


NYCHA Announces Completion of Over $24 Million in Security and Safety Upgrades

On November 27, 2023, the New York City Housing Authority announced that over $24 million in safety and security upgrades had been completed at 23 campuses citywide. City Officials Break Ground on New Park in the Bronx

On November 30, 2023, Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue and New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) President and CEO Andrew Kimball joined elected officials to celebrate the groundbreaking of a new park in the South Bronx. The new park, located on Exterior Street between 144th and 146th Streets, will bring waterfront access and new open space for local Bronx residents.

DOT Begins Enforcement for Overweight Trucks on BQE

On November 9, 2023, Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez announced that the City will start to issue violations for its weigh-in-motion enforcement program that targets overweight trucks on the Brooklyn Queens Expressway (BQE). In August, a 90-day warning period about the violations was launched. The program’s goal is largely to limit the wear and tear on the Expressway’s cantilever.
