    City Planning Commission Approves Two Amendments Promoting Health and Fitness

    Commissioners raised concerns about the removal of special permits as a way to vet out illegitimate massage parlors. On October 20, 2021, the City Planning Commission voted to approve two applications proposed by the City to support small businesses and promote healthy food options and fitness. The two applications, the FRESH Program Expansion and the Health and Fitness Text Amendment, were part of a series of zoning proposals proposed earlier this year.  (more…)

    Council Approves Bill to Require Board of Standards and Appeals to Record Decisions

    The bill provides better transparency and helps potential purchasers and agents. On June 17, 2021, the New York City Council passed a bill to require the City’s Board of Standards and Appeals to record a copy of a decision affecting a parcel of land made by the Board in the appropriate title recording system. The bill, Int. 2257-2021, will require the Board to record the decision with the Automatic City Register Information System (ACRIS) for properties in Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn or Queens and with the Richmond County Clerk’s database for properties in Staten Island.     Landmarks Hosts Virtual Open Office Hours for Homeowners

    Homeowners are encouraged to register early as time slots are limited. On June 11, 2021, the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission announced virtual open office hours initiative that will enable homeowners to meet one-on one with the Landmarks Preservation Commission’s staff to discuss potential projects and ask questions about permitting.     Record-Breaking Creation of Bus and Bicycle Lanes Planned for 2021

    The Department of Transportation plans to create a record-breaking series of bus priority projects and plans to install 30 miles of protected bike lanes in all 5 boroughs. On May 11, 2021, Mayor Bill de Blasio and the Department of Transportation announced plans to increase last year’s protected bike lane installations and nearly double last year’s bus project totals.     HPD Releases Stats and Guidance as City’s Heat Season Begins

    The agency received over 98,000 unique complaints about heat or hot water last season. On October 1, 2020, the Department of Housing Preservation and Development announced the start of the 2020 – 2021 heat season, in which all residential building owners are required to maintain specific indoor temperatures. From October 1, 2020 through May 31, 2021, building owners must maintain indoor temperatures at 68 degrees when outdoor temperatures are below 55 degrees during the daytime and a minimum of 62 degrees indoors overnight regardless of the outdoor temperature. Hot water must be provided at 120 degrees year-round.  (more…)
