    DOB Releases Second Annual Construction Safety Report

    On March 28, 2022, the Department of Buildings released its next construction safety report for the calendar year 2021. The report highlights and provides analysis for safety trends across the city, provides data regarding incidents and provides descriptions of significant construction incidents, including all nine construction-related fatalities from 2021.  (more…)

    DDC Begins Restoration on Landmarked Staten Island Supreme Court Building

    On March 30, 2022, the Department of Design and Construction (DDC) announced the start of a restoration project for the Staten Island Supreme Court Building, located at 18 Richmond Terrace in St. George, Staten Island. The courthouse, a French Renaissance style temple-fronted limestone building, was built in 1913 and designated a New York City landmark in 1982.  (more…)

    Mayor Suspends Key to NYC Rules, Lifts Mask Requirements for Schools as Next Stage of Pandemic Response

    The announcements come after data supports that New York City is currently experiencing low level spread of COVID-19. On March 4, 2022, Mayor Eric Adams announced changes to the City’s COVID-19 protocols in response to the decline of COVID-19 cases citywide. The changes go into effect today, Monday, March 7th.     DEP Announces Rikers Island Feasibility Study for Green Infrastructure Uses

    On February 3, 2022, the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) announced the Rikers Island Feasibility Study, which will determine the capacity for wastewater and organics processing on Rikers Island after the Corrections facilities are shut down. (more…)

    City Council Holds First Hearing on Permanent Open Restaurants Plan

    Many elected officials raised concerns about DOT’s ability to handle the scale and capacity of a citywide permanent open restaurants program. On February 8, 2022, the City Council Subcommittee on Zoning and Franchises held a joint hearing with the Committee on Consumer and Worker Protection on the proposed permanent open restaurant program. The proposed permanent open restaurant program will replace the temporary program and establish a new streamlined program for the creation, management and enforcement of sidewalk and roadway cafes operated by the Department of Transportation.  As of the writing of this article, 12,133 restaurants and cafes are participating in the temporary open restaurant program, which is set to expire at the end of 2022.
