On August 15, 2023, the Landmarks Preservation Commission voted to calendar the Old Croton Aqueduct Walk for consideration as a scenic landmark. The Aqueduct Walk, located between the University Heights and Kingsbridge Heights sections of the Bronx, is a linear park along Aqueduct Avenue between West Kingsbridge Road and Burnside Avenue. On July 11, 2023, Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) approved rules to expedite and simplify the application process for property owners seeking agency approval for certain upgrades to landmarked properties. The new rules will widen the scope of applications that staff can approve, eliminating the need for review by the full Commission at a public hearing. (more…)

On June 27, 2023, the Landmarks Preservation Commission voted to designate three buildings connected to jazz history. The buildings are 105-19 37th Avenue in Corona, Queens, 935 St. Nicholas Avenue in Washington Heights, and the Hotel Cecil & Minton’s Playhouse building at 206 West 118th Street in Harlem. (more…)

On June 13, 2023, the Landmark Preservation Commission voted unanimously to designate the Bronx Opera House, Engine Company 88/Ladder Company 38 Firehouse, and Fire Alarm Telegraph Bureau, Bronx Central Office as individual landmarks. All three buildings located in the Bronx have architectural and historical significance to the borough. (more…)

On May 23, 2023, the Landmarks Preservation Commission voted to designate the former Colored School No. 4 as an individual landmark. The former school, located at 128 West 17th Street in Chelsea, is the city’s sole surviving school building that exclusively served African American students in the second half of the 19th century.
