On March 28, 2023, Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue and Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson joined community representatives and advocates to celebrate the opening of Corporal Fischer Park, a new park in Highbridge that replaced a formerly empty fenced off lot. The new park is on West 170th Street between Nelson Avenue and Shakespeare Avenue. (more…)

The new building will provide supportive services and amenities to tenants. On April 16, 2019, the Department of Housing Preservation and Development, Services for the Underserved, and other development partners announced the opening of 1434 Undercliff Avenue, in the Highbridge neighborhood of the Bronx . The new development will serve as supportive housing for formerly homeless and low-income New Yorkers. (more…)

On March 20, 2023, the Parks Department announced that 240 new “second shift” employees had been recently hired to address park cleanliness issues on evenings and weekends. The new deployment of workers will operate on Thursdays through Sundays during evening hours to address trash, litter and graffiti at certain hotspots around the city. The staff’s efforts to clean up trash and litter will also serve as part of the city’s efforts to push back against pests like rodents. (more…)

On October 3, 2022, Mayor Eric Adams and Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue announced that nine recreation centers across the five boroughs expanded their operating hours. This increase was made possible with $7.1 million in funding by Mayor Adams in the Fiscal Year 2023 budget. (more…)

The agency also piloted a new water safety program for 250 children. On September 8, 2022, the Parks Department shared statistics, updates and accomplishments to celebrate the end of the summer 2022 beach and pool season.
