    Landmarks Approves Revised Plans for Commercial Building in SoHo-Cast Iron Historic District

    The revised plans were inspired by the cast-iron elements of the surrounding buildings in the district. On February 19, 2019, the Landmarks Preservation Commission voted to approve a Certificate of Appropriateness for the proposed demolition of a three-story commercial building and construction of a new six-story building at 430 West Broadway in the SoHo-Cast Iron Historic District. The new building will have retail space at its base and a community facility and offices on the floors above. Morris Adjmi Architects presented the revised plans for the building.

    Landmarks Approves Revised Plans for Office Building in DUMBO

    The revised plans for the building show much thicker masonry as was suggested by Landmarks at previous hearing. On November 13, 2018, the Landmarks Preservation Commission voted to approve a certificate of appropriateness for the proposed demolition of an existing warehouse at 29-37 Jay Street and construction of a new 11-story office building, at the corner of Jay and Plymouth Streets within the DUMBO historic district in Brooklyn. The applicant team, represented by architect Jonathan Marvel, presented the revised plans for the building after listening to Landmarks Commissioners input at the hearing on September 25, 2018.     City Planning Commission Hears Application for Building Addition in Tribeca Historic District

    Building next to unique synagogue will have two additional stories and mezzanine. On November 14, 2018, the City Planning Commission held a public hearing for a special permit application for 51 White Street in Tribeca, Manhattan. The special permit would allow for the addition of two stories to the top of the building and the construction of a mezzanine between the first and second floor. The building has been vacant since 2016 but formerly had a ground floor retail tenant and twelve residential apartments on the other floors. (more…)

    Landmarks Sides with Residents Against Changes to Stand-Alone Mansion-House in Stuyvesant Heights Historic District

    Applicants failed to convince Landmarks Commissioners on the appropriateness of the project. On October 2, 2018, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on a certificate of appropriateness for the construction of a four-story residential building at 375 Stuyvesant Avenue, located in the Stuyvesant Heights Historic District in Brooklyn. The applicants proposed to demolish and reconstruct an existing garage on a different portion of the lot to make room for the proposed building. (more…)

    Landmarks Hears Proposal for a Major Project on One of Staten Island’s Largest Landmarked Sites

    Commissioners make only minor recommendations for the Stone Court mansion project and plan to conduct a site visit before the next hearing. On October 30, 2018, Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on an application for a certificate of appropriateness for a proposed restoration of the Ernest Flagg Stone Court mansion located at 209 Flagg Place in Staten Island, and for the construction of 19 one-family homes to the north and west of the mansion on the Ernest Flagg landmarked estate. The Dutch Colonial Revival style mansion was designed by Ernest Flagg and built in 1898. It was altered in 1907 with Palladian-inspired details, and several accessory buildings were constructed at this time. The mansion served as the Flagg country residence for 50 years before it became home to the St. Charles Seminary in 1947, following Flagg’s death. (more…)
