Both buildings offer a variety of enrichment opportunities and support for seniors. On July 2, 2021, the Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD), the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) and the New York City Housing Development Corporation (HDC) finalized two deals to secure 393 new affordable senior housing units to the Soundview neighborhood in the Bronx and the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood in Brooklyn. The development is next to a subway station and local retail and grocery stores. On January 13, 2021, the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development announced the development team for an affordable senior housing development at 31-07 31st Street in Astoria, Queens. The development will be mixed-use, with 100 percent affordable housing for seniors, a community center and commercial space. The site is currently a city-owned parking lot for the Department of Transportation. (more…)

Landmarks expressed support for the proposed senior housing complex but raised some concerns regarding the new buildings’ impact on the Kreischer House site. On February 4, 2020, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on a Certificate of Appropriateness for three actions to facilitate the development of a new senior housing complex, comprised of eleven buildings, surrounding the Kreischer House. The Kreischer House is located at 4500 Arthur Kill Road in Charlestown, Staten Island. The house and a portion of the land it sits on is landmarked. The project site, which is a total of 206,821 square feet of land, includes the Kreischer House and the landmarked site. The landmarked site, which is 81,102 square feet of land, is located on the northeast portion of the project site. The project site is on the east side of Arthur Kill Road between Englewood Avenue and Tiller Court. The MTA Charleston Bus Depot is located directly south of the project site and the Colonial Rifle and Pistol Club is located to the east of the project site.

The project is a part of NYCHA’s efforts to build 10,000 units of affordable housing over the next decade. On December 17, 2019, the Department of Housing, Preservation and Development (HPD) announced the opening of Stonewall House, a new LGBT-friendly affordable elder housing at 112 St. Edwards Street in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. The project is the first elder housing in both the City and State to be designed as “LGBT-friendly.” (more…)

The project will bring 152 units of affordable and supportive housing to the South Bronx. On September 10, 2019, the Department of Housing Preservation and Development, the New York City Housing Development Corporation (HDC), the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), and the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance/Homeless Housing and Assistance Corporation (OTDA/HHAC), elected officials and project partners broke ground on “Betances Residence,” a new senior housing project.
