    Queens Rezoning Application Sees Opposition From Residents

    Mixed-use building seeks to bring residential and commercial space, but residents do not agree. On May 23, 2018, the City Planning Commission held a public hearing on the 40-31 82nd Street Rezoning application by The Heskel Group under representation by Nora Martins of Akerman LLP. The application seeks a zoning map amendment and zoning text amendment to develop a mixed-use building with residential, commercial, and community facility space in a currently vacant lot. The project site is located along Ithaca Street, Baxter Avenue and 82nd Street in Elmhurst, Queens. (more…)

    Comptroller Report Finds Airbnb Usage Contributed to High Rent Problem

    On April 2018, New York City Comptroller Scott M. Stringer issued a report on the impact of Airbnb on City rents. The report looked at how the home-sharing company impacted rent in the City over the period of 2009 to 2016. The report found that rental rates increases during this time period can be attributed to Airbnb. (more…)

    Request for Qualifications Used To Match Buildings With Buyers

    Request for Qualifications will be used to identify potential buyers who will preserve and maintain affordability. On April 5, 2018, Housing Preservation and Development Commissioner Maria Torres-Springer announced the release of a Request for Qualifications to establish a list of Qualified Preservation Buyers. The Request for Qualifications will identify qualified buyers to purchase and rehabilitate buildings in the City. It will be used as a resource to create a list for potential sellers to find buyers who will maintain the affordable units created in purchased buildings. (more…)

    The Right To Counsel For Tenants Who Face Eviction

    On August 11, 2017, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio signed legislation, the first of its kind in the nation, which guarantees legal representation for low-income tenants who face eviction. The new law has two major innovations with respect to eviction petitions brought in Housing Court. (more…)
