    Record-Breaking Creation of Bus and Bicycle Lanes Planned for 2021

    The Department of Transportation plans to create a record-breaking series of bus priority projects and plans to install 30 miles of protected bike lanes in all 5 boroughs. On May 11, 2021, Mayor Bill de Blasio and the Department of Transportation announced plans to increase last year’s protected bike lane installations and nearly double last year’s bus project totals.     Landmarks Calendars Three Sites Amid Launch of Equity Framework

    The Equity Framework aims to increase diversity in New York’s landmarks and work within the Landmarks Preservation Commission. On January 19, 2021, the Landmarks Preservation Commission voted to calendar three sites for designation as part of the agency’s launch of an equity framework designed to better represent New York City’s diversity and underrepresented populations. The three sites calendared for proposed designation are the Conference House Park Archeological Site in Tottenville, Staten Island, the Holyrood Episcopal Church-Iglesia Santa Cruz in Washington Heights, Manhattan, and 70 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. They are all cultural or historic sites that represent different populations across New York’s history. (more…)

    New Design Team Selected for Site’s Redevelopment Does Not Quell Controversy

    Architecture firm BKSK replaced Gruzen Samton on a proposal for new seven-story structure where one-story building now stands. On January 21, 2014, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a hearing for a proposed seven-story development on a triangular site at 130 Seventh Avenue South in the Greenwich Village Historic District, where a 1937 one-story building now stands. Landmarks previously held a hearing on the site’s development in July 2013.  At a later public meeting, commissioners advised that the proposal required significant rethinking before it could be approved, but also determined that the existing one-story, heavily altered structure did not contribute substantially to the historic district and could be demolished.     Landmarks Holds Public Hearing for Julius’ Bar

    Located at the corner of West 10th Street and Waverly Place, Julius’ holds great significance in NYC’s LGBTQ+ history and is undergoing Individual Landmark consideration. On November 15, 2022, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing to discuss landmarking Julius’ Bar, located at 159 West 10th Street in Manhattan. The building was previously calendared for Individual Landmark consideration on September 13. (more…)

    Jefferson Market Public Library Completes Necessary Upgrades

    On July 14, 2022, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was hosted celebrating the completion of a $10 million project for vital upgrades to the Jefferson Market Public Library located in Greenwich Village, Lower Manhattan. This project began in 2019, is part of a $600 million project for capital improvements across the New York Public Library system and was led by the NYC Department of Design and Construction in conjunction with NSP Enterprises, Inc. and was designed by WXY Architecture + Urban Design.
