    On June 28, 2023, Mayor Eric Adams and Sanitation Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced the finalization of a new administrative rule requiring food-related businesses to put trash in secure containers. The announcement is the newest part of the city’s efforts to combat rodent infestations.  (more…)

    City Council Creates Mandatory Citywide Residential Organics Collection Program as Part of Zero Waste Act

    Residents will be required to sort out organic waste, like recycling. On June 8, 2023, the City Council voted to approve the Zero Waste Act, a package of bills aimed at reducing the amount of organic waste in landfills. The Zero Waste Act consists of five bills, including the creation of a mandatory organic waste curbside collection program. (more…)

    Mayor Announces $6 Million Investment to Rehabilitate City’s Newest Landmark

    On May 23, 2023, Mayor Eric Adams announced a $6 million investment to rehabilitate the former Colored School No. 4, the city’s newest landmark which was designated earlier that day. The school building, located at 128 West 17th Street in Chelsea, is the last remaining school building that exclusively served African American students.     Mayor Appoints City’s First “Rat Czar” to Handle Rodent Mitigation

    On April 12, 2023, New York City Mayor Eric Adams appointed Kathleen Corradi as the City’s first-ever citywide Director of Rodent Mitigation, also known as the “Rat Czar.” Corradi is tasked with working and coordinating with multiple city agencies, community organizations, and private entities to achieve the City’s goal of reducing the rat population and improving the health issues related to rodents.     HPD Announces Start of Community Visioning Process for Affordable Housing Site in St. George

    On March 21, 2023, the Department of Housing Preservation and Development announced the start of a community visioning process for the development of affordable housing and neighborhood amenities at 539 Jersey Street in the St. George neighborhood of Staten Island. The 115,000 square foot site, currently a garage for the Department of Sanitation, will be transformed to better serve the neighborhood.  (more…)
