    City Installs New Sewer and Water Mains in Southeast Queens

    The project was completed 5 months early and $2.7 million under budget and is a part of the $1.9 billion program to improve street and flooding conditions in southeast Queens. On June 2, 2021, the New York City Department of Environmental Protection announced that a $20.5 million project to upgrade infrastructure, improve street conditions, and alleviate flooding in Hollis and Queens Village had been completed.     The Brooklyn-Queens Expressway: Time is Running Out

    One year ago, in January 2020, the Expert Panel assigned by Mayor Bill de Blasio to study the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway issued its Final Report. Mayor de Blasio in 2019 appointed the seventeen-person Expert Panel* of which I was a member, following the angry rejection of New York City DOT’s plan for reconstructing the section of the BQE adjacent to Brooklyn Heights, Dumbo and Downtown Brooklyn. City DOT presented its plan publicly September 2019. The plan caused immediate outrage. (more…)

    Landmarks Designates PS 48 as First Landmark in South Jamaica, Queens

    PS 48 is the first landmark to undergo its entire designation public hearing process over Zoom. On September 22, 2020, the Landmarks Preservation Commission designated Public School 48, also known as The Robert E. Peary School in Jamaica, Queens, as an individual landmark. PS 48 is located on 108th Ave and 155th Street, and is a three-story art deco style public school building. PS 48 is the first building to be designated an individual landmark in South Jamaica, and is the second art deco building designated as a landmark in New York City.     Landmarks Calendars Jamaica, Queens Public School for Designation

    The public school building’s design and details set it apart from other school buildings built during the early 20th century. On June 9, 2020, the Landmarks Preservation Commission voted to calendar Public School 48 in Jamaica, Queens for designation as an individual landmark. Public School 48, located at 155-02 108th Avenue, is an Art Deco style three-story public school building designed by Walter C. Martin.

    City Planning Approves Application for New Eight-Story Mixed Use Building in Sunnyside, Queens

    The proposed development would bring 60 residential units to Sunnyside, Queens. On On February 19, 2020, the City Planning Commission approved an application to rezone a block in Sunnyside, Queens from a low density residential zoning district that allows three-story buildings to a medium density residential zoning district that allows eight-story buildings. The rezoning would affect all the addresses on the east side of 52nd Street and 52-06, 52-08, and 52-10 Roosevelt Avenue bounded by Roosevelt Avenue to the north and Queens Boulevard to the south.
