Landmarks Calendars the Heckscher (Crown) Building for Designation
On December 12, 2023, the Landmarks Preservation Commission voted to calendar the Heckscher Building at 730 Fifth Avenue for future designation. The building, now the Crown Building, is one of Fifth Avenue’s early skyscrapers.

City Receives Over $10 Million in Grants to Support Electrification of Governors Island Ferry, Operation of Staten Island Ferry
On December 1, 2023, Mayor Eric Adams announced that the city has received over $10 million from the U.S. Federal Transit Administration to support ferry services to Staten Island and Governor’s Island. The funding includes a $7.5 million grant to install shoreside rapid charging infrastructure for the new hybrid-electric Governors Island Ferry and $3 million to rehabilitate the City’s Department of Transportation offsite storage facility that supports the Staten Island Ferry.
Council Passes Bill to Allow for Tenant Complaints and Inspections of Unoccupied Apartments
On December 6, 2023, the City Council voted to approve Int. 195-B, which creates a path for tenants to report housing maintenance code violations for unoccupied units in their buildings. The bill, sponsored by Council Member Carlina Rivera, provides a way for tenants to have their concerns addressed when conditions in unoccupied apartments are impacting tenants in other apartments.
Landmarks Designates Joseph Rodman Drake Park and Enslaved People’s Burial Ground
On December 12, 2023, the Landmarks Preservation Commissioner voted to designate the Joseph Rodman Drake Park and Enslaved People’s Burial Ground as a landmark. The park is located on the block with Oak Point Avenue to the north, Drake Park South to the south, Longfellow Avenue to the west and Hunts Point Avenue to the east.
