    City Announces New Investments in Traffic Safety and Accessibility Improvements

    The plan follows additional commitments to improve safety and accessibility in 1,000 intersections citywide earlier this year. On April 23, 2022, Mayor Eric Adams announced a $904 million investment over the next five years in improving traffic safety and infrastructure. The investments will help advance the “NYC Streets Plan”, the five-year plan developed by the Department of Transportation (DOT) to improve street safety, quality and accessibility.  (more…)

    City Takes First Steps in Exploration of Geothermal Utility Services

    Geothermal heating and cooling are a very efficient and environmentally clean technology and energy that has been in use for decades but has gone underutilized by New York City. On April 21, 2021, Mayor de Blasio announced the first steps that will be taken to advance New York City’s transition to district geothermal systems. These geothermal systems will help replace fuel oil and natural gas, fundamentally changing how New York City heats and cools its buildings. (more…)

    Mayor Announces Zoning Proposals for Grocery Stores, Transit Accessibility, Small Businesses

    The zoning proposals include allowing gyms and spas to open as-of-right. On March 9, 2021, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced several proposed zoning changes to support small businesses, create more groceries stores and improve accessibility across the city.     Mayor Announces City Divestment from Fossil Fuel Companies

    This divestment will address significant risks fossil fuel holdings pose to the environment and funds. On January 25, 2021, Mayor de Blasio, Comptroller Stringer, and trustees announced that they had voted to divest their portfolios from securities related to fossil fuel companies, in what is expected to be the largest divestment in the world.     City Reaches Settlement Agreement with Verizon FiOS Regarding Expansion

    The new agreement stresses the need for internet access. On November 24, 2020, Mayor Bill de Blasio announce efforts to tackle the digital divide in New York City by ensuring that Verizon builds out its FiOS footprint to 500,000 additional householders, making high-speed fiber broadband available to more New Yorkers. Verizon failed to meet the terms of its current cable franchise agreement made with the Bloomberg administration to build out its FiOS network. (more…)
